Lauren Boilini and Henry Cowdery:
Underbelly
January 2O2O

Underbelly is an immersive impression of a whale fall. When a whale dies and falls to the floor of the ocean, it creates a complex ecosystem that can provide sustenance for deep-sea organisms for decades. Similar to the nurse logs we find in the Northwest, this occurrence creates life after death. As artists, we are both interested in the cycles joining life and death. Cowdery’s work investigates the role of time in the natural world and Boilini’s looks at violence and death, both the man-made and the natural.
